It's all over now - and congratulations all round!!!
Whow, we are amazing! On the long ride to Berlin, host of the World Championships 2013 for the Icelandic horse, together we achieved a distance of – wait for it: 24,397.54km.
That takes us onto a latitude, which (more or less) runs through Birmingham, Amsterdam and the centre of BERLIN! (The length of the latitude, which runs through the Brandenburg Gate is 24,473km!) Honestly, I did not ‘doctor’ the figures. On the contrary, I was a bit embarrassed when it looked for a while that we might end up circumnavigating the earth coming through my home in Aberdeen...
I know from many very kind comments, that each of the 26 riders who completed the challenge to ride from home to Berlin, either alone, or in a team, between 4th August 2012 and 4th August 2013, had wonderful adventures, achieved amazing personal targets, became more conscious of the qualities of the Icelandic horse (and maybe also the fantastic community that forms around that horse?). So, congratulations all round!

What it's all about...
In 2011, we celebrated the 25th Anniversary of IHSGB with the Long Ride. Over a memorable September weekend riders took to the lanes with their Icelandic horses, and together they covered almost the whole country, from John o' Groats right down to Chelteham, a grand total of 618 miles. A great effort - and a huge celebration.
In 2013, the Icelandic Horse World Championships will start in Germany. So why not do it again, and take a virtual ride to Berlin? This time, riders can choose to accumulate the whole distance individually; or form a group, which can then add together the miles of all riders in the group to cover the distance. Since for most of us Berlin is quite a long way away, we shall start earlier, namely on Sat 4th August 2012 - a year to the day.
And we won't be alone
There will be three (real time) relay rides to Berlin. One from the previous venue: Austria. One from the country who is currently fighting a hard battle to preserve access rights for horses: Denmark. And the third one - just for the fun of, it, and because the World Championships have been there, too: the Netherlands.
The grand plan is that on 4th August 2013 1000 Icelandic horses - coming from all points of the compass - will gather under the Brandenburg Gates for the launch of the World Championships. Even if most of us will not bring our own horses, this will be a sight worth seeing! And if you can share in the pride of 'having ridden' there - so much the better!
So, join in - you'll get there!
Happy tölting!
