"Ride to Berlin2013" - how can I join in?
Participating is easy. Here are a few very simple rules:

To make it more fun, identify some stages on your route to Berlin using google maps, or similar (eg, if you live in Newcastle and have achieved your first 136 km you would find yourself in York, and then it is only another 56 km to Doncaster...) . Map the stages and keep a track on where you might be. You may want to visit friends on the way? Who knows, you may even persuade them to join in? Either way, please email your pictures of the real rides, and add to the blog to share your experiences of the real and imaginary stages.

Obviously, it is a bit harder to come from the north compared to those, heading straight for the ferry... So, riders may join together as a group. The distance of every rider is then added together - and you will get there quicker. Forming a group can be done at any time until 1st July 2013. Maximum number of riders per group is 7. No rider may be a member of more than one group, and the group score counts before individual scores.

This may - or may not - turn into a race ride towards the end - we'll see. But in the meantime, remember - it is the ride that matters! Then we can all be champions!

And the prize? Well, times are hard, and you may think you will not actually make it to Berlin? Why not get some sponsorship? Or even use it as a saving device? For every km you ride a pound goes in the piggy bank? See you in Berlin 2013!
- Register here. You can choose a nickname for yourself (or your horse) by which you want to be listed.
- Set yourself a target by calculating the distance from your home (or region, if you want to 'ride in a group') to Berlin. Use google maps (or similar), to find your route add directions. Under the two boxes for the destinations, click 'show options', choose km and 'avoid highways' to give you a more direct route). For example, having clicked 'avoid highways', the distance between Aberdeen and Berlin shows up as 1868km. Hmmm - I think we need some team work here!
- Starting on 4th August, keep a record of every km (!) that you ride out on one (or any) of your Icelandic horses, and send a regular update to [email protected]
- At the beginning of every calendar month your progress will be updated here. Of course, all kms ridden in endurance rides, TREC or similar events count, and your distance does not need to be verified - every ridden km gets you closer to Berlin!
